Action-Rhyme of the Week - Two Little Feet

Storytime went great!

Today was the first storytime I was involved with here in Lovettsville. We had a snow theme, which was great because we all wanted more of it since the winter has seemed so brief.

In the morning, we had the 2/3's in, and they were all so cute. It was great to meet them all, to watch them watch Barbara as she read.

In the afternoon, the 3/4/5's came in, where Barbara and I read to them more stories about snow. They were a great group as well, full of energy. It's gonna be a challenge to keep them interested!

1st day on the job!!

Today was my first official day at the library! It was a good one, meeting the other employees and the regular patrons that came by. I'm not great with names, so please forgive me the first few times I ask for it! It will take some time to get to know all of you, and for you to get to know me!

My name is Jessica Moore, and I am the new Youth Specialist at the Lovettsville Library. I just moved to Virginia from Texas, where I lived for 3 1/2 years. My husband is in the Navy, so we move every 3 years, on average. Before Texas, we were in England, and Virginia Beach before that.

We are very happy to be out of the Texas heat, though lately we could use some of their 60 degree weather!!

I am very excited about working here in Lovettsville, being a part of storytime and other wonderful programs we will put on throughout the year. This coming Monday I will be assisting Barbara with storytime, getting to know the group, and preparing for the weeks to come!

2008 Caldecott Winner

Last summer at the Annual Conference of the American Library Association, there was a buzz about this book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. It is a juvenile fiction story that is a hybrid of text and picture. There was much speculation that it might win both the Caldecott and the Newbery Medals. Unfortunately, it did not, but it did take the Caldecott, the first text-based book to do so. It is a great book, one that I recommend that you check out today! (Ages 9-12)

Review from ALA: From an opening shot of the full moon setting over an awakening Paris in 1931, this tale casts a new light on the picture book form. Hugo is a young orphan secretly living in the walls of a train station where he labors to complete a mysterious invention left by his father. In a work of more than 500 pages, the suspenseful text and wordless double-page spreads narrate the tale in turns. Neither words nor pictures alone tell this story, which is filled with cinematic intrigue. Black & white pencil illustrations evoke the flickering images of the silent films to which the book pays homage.

DC_Kidlit

Joined a Yahoo book group today, called DC_Kidlit. It is a book club for adults who enjoy discussing children's literature. The book club meets once a month in the Washington D.C. area.

The book club is open to librarians, teachers, authors, illustrators, parents, and anyone who would like to discuss children's books. The club's selections will feature a variety of book genres.

This Yahoo group is for planning, organizing and communicating about upcoming meetings and books.

I will be the new Children's Librarian at the Lovettsville Branch Library in Loudoun County, Virginia. I am looking forward to this job and hope to use this blog as a way to record my storytimes, and to share the ups and downs as I begin this adventure. I will be putting up my storytime plans, including the books I use, the games we will play, and how well they are received.
